Marines,

The 2010 Mid-Winter Conference has come and gone, and with it starts the kick off of the 87th National Convention in Greensboro, NC at the Koury Convention Center.  With a Southern flare, we hope to energize everyone that attends whether you attend either the Opening Session, the Banquet or the entire week.  The upcoming edition of the Semper Fi magazine will have all of the activities for the week of August 8th through the 13th for each of you to sign up for.  Some of these activities are limited so don't be caught waiting until the last minute to send your request in.  Oh, I can't let you go without mentioning our theme for this 87th Convention….’A Tribute to Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune (Le-jern)!  See you there!

Marines,

A former Marine and friend of Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune's family has a message for local media around the North Carolina base that bears the legendary Marine's name: “If your going to report on it, say it right.”  This former Marine was an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines.  He was scheduled to host a "professional military education class" on the proper pronunciation of Lejeune's ( Leh-Jern ) name at the base this past June, 2009.  The base is commonly referred to as "Leh-june" rather than "Luh-jern," the French-Creole pronunciation preferred by Baton Rouge, LA natives.  The intent of the PME is to persuade Local Media to pronounce the name properly and encourage Marines in the base public affairs office to up their efforts to get the word out, according to a base spokesperson.  "John Archer Lejeune raised the bar in our Corps," this marine wrote in Leatherneck magazine.  "...The rock hard fact is:  We Marines owe our 13th Commandant our honor, courage, commitment, and above all RESPECT."  Well, I'm about to mount my snowmobile, and head for the Mid-Winter Conference in Washington.  This is to kick off the 2010 Convention in Greensboro North Carolina.  Perhaps I’ll see you there!

Marines,

You won't hear Commandant Gen. James Conway mispronouncing the name of the Corps' largest East Coast base OR the famous Marine for which it is named.  He says "Luh-jern," the same way Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune did, and all his relatives have for centuries.  As you can imagine, it will take some time for many of you, who simply have not known better, to internalize the correct pronunciation, but we'll get there.  By the way, Commandant Gen. James Conway will be our featured speaker at the 2010 National Convention Banquet in Greensboro North Carolina.  He will be retiring in November of 2010.  So, make sure you have your Banquet tickets in hand.  We hope to see you there!

Subject:  Latest news and information on the 87th National Convention - 15-JAN-10

Marines,

The city of Jacksonville in anticipation of the 2010 MCL National Convention, has started the celebration of our Tribute to John Archer Lejeune ( Luh-Jern ), by naming the day John was born, 10-January-1867, in his honor.  Veterans, City Leaders, and Officials from Camp LeJeune ( Luh-Jern ) gathered at the Jacksonville Town Hall to recognize the Base's namesake; a man whose namesake includes "the greatest of all Leathernecks" and " the Marine's Marine."  My thanks go out to retired Marine Staff Sergeant George Barrows, Sr. for his hard work in making this happen!

For those of you who will be flying into Greensboro, I can't recommend enough, that you make your reservations now in order to get the best available flight at the best cost!  Finally, if you haven't made your hotel reservations, please do so.  Semper Fidelis Marines and I look forward to seeing all of you in August!
