Honor Our Veterans
Compatriots, Fellow Veterans, Family, Friends and others who wish they had never given me their e-mail :-),
I know it's barely August and the temperature is nearing 90 degrees but I need to ask you to think about the upcoming Christmas season.
I'd like to encourage each of you to consider sponsoring a holiday wreath for Wreaths Across America (WAA) or volunteering to assist WAA with the December 12 ceremony at the National Cemetery closest to you. For those of you that are members of the SAR, I'd should mention that the National Society has endorsed this organization and encourages support of their efforts.
For those who are unfamiliar with the program I'll briefly explain.
WAA is a non-profit organization that seeks to honor our country's veterans by placing wreaths on the graves of those veterans buried in our National cemeteries. I'm sure you've seen the news reports each December concerning the wreaths that are placed on the graves in Arlington National Cemetery. WAA grew out of that and seeks to find patriotic Americans who are willing to sponsor wreaths. Sponsorship covers the cost to make and transport the wreaths to over 350 National cemeteries across the United States and overseas.
More
information is available at
www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org
Attached is a form which can be used to sponsor a wreath that will be
placed on a grave at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The Conrad
Weiser Society, Children of the American Revolution is working to get
sponsors specifically for Indiantown Gap National Cemetery but you can
designate any National Cemetery (see the list of cemeteries on the WAA
website) to receive your sponsored wreath.
If you choose to use the attached form, please make the check out to "Wreaths Across America" and send it to the address on the form. If you prefer to sponsor using a credit card, you'll need to go to the WAA website and enter your sponsorship through the online form. Since this is one of the veterans projects being done by the kids of the Conrad Weiser Society, C.A.R., I humbly ask that you enter their group number (#PACAR0001) if using the online form. Although, it is not necessary to enter a group number to sponsor a wreath.
If you feel that this is a worthy cause, please feel free to copy the attached form and share it with your family and friends or forward this e-mail to spread the word. The goal is to find sponsors for 2,500 wreaths for each National Cemetery.

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have or direct you to someone that can explain the program better than I can.

We need your help. Time is of the essence and these are critical times for the budget process. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
V/R, Paul Hastings
Please take action as indicated below in the message from Stacy Gromlich of Triad Strategies. This is very important at this time because:
There are a few bits of good news about veterans’ benefits. The latest alternative budget proposals are revealing increases over what was in SB 850. Thanks to the legislators responsible for that.
Also Triad has just advised that the House appropriations committee has just voted out of committee HB 1416 (the gov's budget) with amendment 02698, page 58 containing 7 million state dollars for SSVC!!!!!! Thanks to the legislators responsible for that.

We must keep up the fight for veterans’ benefits across the board!
I look forward to hearing from many of you as to how the conversations with your legislators went.

Larry,
As we discussed when we saw you in the capitol today, we believe after speaking with Representative Barbin that it is important to try to get veterans to reach out to their home district legislators. In doing so, they can visit www.legis.state.pa.us and use the upper right hand corner to find their legislator by county or zip code. Once identified, we ask that they call their Member’s District Office phone number and say the following:
Hi, My name is________ and I am a veteran and would like to speak directly with Senator/Representative _____________. I wanted to make sure the Member received our letter asking for support of veterans services.
Should the Member take the call please discuss the following points:
Should they ask to leave a message, please do so and let them know you want to speak directly to the Member about veterans’ benefits. If the Member calls back please make the points listed above.
If at all possible please report back to Larry Holman how the conversation went.
Attached is the letter sent to all Members referred to in this email.
Thanks!
Stacy

Over 114 years, Scotland School for Veterans' Children has been home to more than 10,000 children. Were it not for the school, many of us would not have had the quality education we received or have found teachers and staff who cared so much for us and helped us become the decent, contributing, taxpaying citizens that we are today.
Scotland School does today exactly what it did during the Civil War -- educates children of veterans in a safe, nurturing environment. To look only at the cost (overstated by the governor's administration) of placing a child at SSVC and not at the price our fathers, mothers and other relatives paid for their service to our country is a great disservice to our veterans.
With wars on two fronts and Pennsylvania sending one of the largest contingents of citizens to serve, there is now, and will continue to be, a greater need for the benefits Scotland School provides.
If during the great depression Gov. Gifford Pinchot could find the dollars needed to keep the school open, surely our state legislators can find funds to operate SSVC today.
From the time of the Civil War to February of this year, Pennsylvania governors and legislators have been committed to the children of those who leave their families and put their own lives in harm's way. Surely we still owe Pennsylvania's children as much today and owe no less to our veterans.
We ask each legislator to find a way to fund SSVC and honor the legacy of past governors and legislators, and not deny another benefit to Pennsylvania's veterans. In short, please save our school!
