Reaching Out – Grabbing Hold

Many of you might not be aware but the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is statistically disproportionately represented in the total number of troops – active, reserve, guard units – currently stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Eventually, these troops will return home – what then?  Who cares?

The members of the Marine Corps League’s 72 Detachments that make up the Department of Pennsylvania care, and are prepared to assist these veterans and many, many others as they re-assimilate themselves to a stateside existence; as they deal with the destruction and death that they may have witnessed or had to participated in; as they recover from injury and trauma, financial difficulties and employment.

The Marine Corps League is a veterans’ organization of the United States Marines. It is composed of Marines and FMF Corpsmen with honorable service. It aims to perpetuate the traditions and spirit of the United States Marine Corps through continuous association of Marines who served under the Eagle, Globe and Anchor at any time, in war or peace.  We also welcome members of the Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and non-Veterans to join us as Associate members who follow the same principals and ethos as Marines do.

The League was founded by Major General John A. Lejeune in 1923 and chartered by an Act of Congress on August 4, 1937. Its membership of over 70,000 is comprised primarily of honorably discharged, retired, active duty and Reserve Marines and FMF Corpsmen with 90 days of service or more. It includes officers and enlisted personnel, both male and female, irrespective of age.

The Marine Corps League is classified as a veterans/military service organization and was formed for the purposes of promoting the interest of the U. S. Marine Corps; to provide camaraderie and assistance to Marines, as well as to their widows and orphans; and to preserve the traditions of the U. S. Marine Corps.

Remember that old kid’s retort…”Takes one to know one”?  Well...it takes a Marine to know a Marine, and we, the Marine Corps League, can do a far better job of reaching out to and grabbing hold of one another to support and uplift, and generally enjoy each other’s company while continuing to serve our country, our state and our communities than if we try to go it on our own

It is with this in mind that the Marine Corps League’s Department of Pennsylvania is pursuing a membership drive throughout Pennsylvania; not just to ‘get more members’, but to ‘Reach Out’ to and ‘Grab Hold’ of all those Marines and other military personnel who have served.  The Marine Corps League is looking for a few good men and women.

Please contact:  Commandant Leanna Dietrich – (1-800-779-7301) or at shortdevildog99211@comcast.net; or Senior Vice Commandant and Membership Committee Chair, Neil Corley - 302-934-1829 or at ncorley@mchsi.com  to locate a Detachment in your area.  Attend a meeting or two, and then join your brothers and sisters in uniform in a commitment to one another and your communities to foster good citizenship, civic and national pride, and to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow veterans and active duty personnel.
