MARINE CORPS LEAGUE

Members Sick and In Distress

08 April 2008

The latest on Marine Don Kohler.  I spoke with his daughter Tina yesterday.  I wish the news were better.  Apparently Don has kidney failure or close to it.  For the rest of his life he has to go to the Lancaster Health Campus every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for dialysis.  He has to do three and one half hours each time.  He goes from 16:30 to about 20:00.  As you can imagine this is pretty trying on the family, moving their work schedules and everything around to keep his appointment.  Don's not allowed to miss a single one.  The family would appreciate it if anyone would have time to take him to an appointment from time to time.  Or even just to pick him up and drop him off or just to pick him up at the hospital and take him home.  It would relieve the family and I am sure Don would be glad to see some of the guys.  With his dialysis schedule, Don will never be able to make a League meeting again.  If you have some time to help, please call Tina on her cell at 717-309-2896.

Fellow Veterans and Friends:

I regret to inform you that one of the few remaining Bn Commanders from Iwo Jima is in the hospital. Colonel Gerald "Gerry" Russell, USMC (Ret) fell recently and broke his hip. I talked to him yesterday and his spirits were high for a Marine in his early 90's. He is in a "Rehab" hospital in State College and at that moment was on his way to physical therapy, which he said he looked forward to because the nurses were so pretty and nice!

He may be moved from the current medical facility so if you want to drop him a card, please use his home address. His daughter Eileen goes by, picks up his mail and takes it to him. (His wife died several years ago.)

Gerry was supposed to be here in Washington this weekend for the annual Iwo Jima Reunion and Symposium.

Please say a prayer for his speedy recovery!

 His home address is:

Col. Gerald F. Russell, USMC (Ret)
1031 Greenfield Circle
State College, PA 16801-4208
